The murder of George Floyd

The Star Tribune broke the news of the police killing of George Floyd sparking unrest across Minnesota and around the world. Floyd, a black man, pleaded, “I can’t breathe” and called out for his mother as Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, kneeled on his neck for nine minutes.

A year later, a jury found Chauvin guilty of Floyd’s murder.

The Star Tribune staff won the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in breaking news reporting for this coverage.
